Make Your Own: Summer's here

At Yoto we’re determined to give kids plenty of fun and creative ways to enjoy their summer holidays. So, pick up a Make Your Own card - it's time to get in the spirit of summer!

Make Your Own cards offer endless opportunities for your little ones to get creative. Whether you’re recording stories or songs, you can store up to 500MB on each card and edit them as many times as you like.

Once you're happy with your recordings, you can decorate your Make Your Own cards with stickers, drawings, and even messages - so you know what's what and who's who. Then you can play them whenever you like or send them to friends and family members to tap on their phones or listen to on their own Yoto players.

Plus, when you add others to your Yoto Family Account, they'll be able to record their own stories directly into the Yoto App and have them appear on your phone to link to your Make Your Own cards! Say what?

Read on to discover some of the ways your family can use Make Your Own cards:

Start a Family Band
Are your kids becoming musical maestros?

Why not show off your virtuosic self by recording your family band? Pots and pans, toy keyboards, and broken ukuleles will do just fine. What matters is that you all have fun and make plenty of noise!

Start a Family Book Club
Is there a talented storyteller in your family or friendship circle?

It's easy to add friends and family to your Yoto Player's Family Account so they can record stories in the Yoto App for you to listen to.

Have them make a recording for you to link to a Make Your Own card. It could be one of their favourite storybooks or a tale of their own invention. Roald Dahl famously came up with many of his most beloved tales while thinking of bedtime stories for his daughters!

If your friends don't want to download the Yoto App, that's fine! Most smartphones have free voice recording apps which they can use to record and email their stories.

Get Crafty in the Kitchen
Whipping up delicious food together is one of the best things you can do as a family.

If your kids love to get involved in the kitchen, why not make some recipes to listen to while you cook together? Then you won't need to worry about which hand is clean enough to turn the pages!

These Make Your Own cards are perfect for sending to friends and family who might need a little culinary inspiration. Get the kids to record their recipe, decorate their card, and then pop it in the mail!

Knock, knock!
There’s always at least one joker in the family. If you’ve got some hilarious jokes to tell, pop on your comedian cap and get giggling.

If you’re at a loss for jokes, you can always tune into Yoto Daily on Fridays to hear plenty of jokes from Yoto listeners around the world!

Tip: You can record your jokes, recipes, or stories straight into the Yoto App thanks to the recording section!

Pick your Podcast or Radio Station
The Yoto App already contains a curated selection of radio and podcasts.

To utilise these on a Make Your Own card, go to My Library, then select either the Radio or Podcasts tab near the top. Find something that you would like to listen to and tap on the title to select the three-dot menu from within the detail page, then select Link To A Card.

Next, insert a Make Your Own card into your Yoto Player or Yoto Mini and confirm on the Yoto App by pressing the LINK button. You should see a 'record' icon on the display, followed by a green tick to indicate a successful link. The card should now be removed and reinserted in order to play it.

Want to listen to something not covered in the Yoto App? Make a card using any radio station you like that has a live stream on the internet and any single podcast episode from a series you like. The first step is to find the direct stream URL for that piece of content.

From the My Library tab, select Make Your Own and then MAKE NEW. This will take you out of the app to a web browser page where you will need to log in using the same details (email address) as you do for the app. Once you’ve logged in, select MAKE NEW. Then follow the instructions to add your chosen stream to a playlist. You can add more than one stream, and you can give this playlist a name.
Once your playlist has been created, go back to the app and navigate to the Make Your Own tab in the My Library section. You should see your newly created playlist in the library. Follow the same steps as above to link this playlist to a Make Your Own card. Et voila!

Tip: for podcasts, make sure you link to the URL stream of a particular episode, not the link to a series as this will not work.
