Yoto Mini customers: Product Safety Issue
We’ve identified a safety issue with Yoto Minis manufactured between 2021 and 2023. Out of 340,000 sold, we know of a very small number of Yoto Minis which contained a battery that overheated when at a high state of charge, posing a potential burn or fire hazard. There have been no reported injuries.
Customer safety is our number one priority and we’ve taken this matter extremely seriously.
We are providing everyone who has a Yoto Mini with a free Yoto Mini Smart Cable (one per device) which will charge the battery to a safe level. We also implemented an automatic software update across all Yoto Minis.
Yoto Mini Product Safety Recall
We’re recalling Yoto Minis manufactured between 2021 and 2023 purchased via the Yoto website or third party retailers due to a potential safety issue. The Yoto Mini is powered by a non-replaceable lithium pouch battery. While the Yoto Mini device is being charged, the internal battery may overheat. If the Yoto Mini battery overheats, there is a risk that it will present a burn or fire hazard. There have been no reported injuries.
Customer safety is our number one priority and we’ve taken this matter extremely seriously.
What you need to do:
- We ask that you dispose of your current Yoto Mini Cable and do not use your Yoto Mini until you have received your replacement Yoto Mini Smart Cable.
- Only use the Yoto Mini Smart Cable to charge the Yoto Mini. No other cable should be used.
We are providing everyone who has a Yoto Mini with a free Yoto Mini Smart Cable (one per device) which will charge the battery to a safe level. We also implemented an automatic software update across all Yoto Minis.
We will contact all registered users but if you sold, or are the gift giver of a Yoto Mini and not the user, please notify the recipient of the need to only use a Yoto Mini Smart Cable.

What do I need to do?
To order your free Yoto Mini Smart Cable, you will need the email address that your Yoto Mini is registered with to log in, and your Yoto Mini close by to check the base for the Serial Number.
How do I know if my Yoto Mini is affected and I need to use a Smart Cable?
All Yoto Minis manufactured between 2021 and 2023 must be charged with a Yoto Mini Smart Cable.
Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) have 14 digit serial numbers that end with a dash H or dash U, or are 9FE and higher.
I have more than one Yoto Mini. Can I get more than one Yoto Mini Smart Cable?
Yes, you can register to receive one free Yoto Mini Smart Cable for each registered Yoto Mini that you own. Please register each Yoto Mini separately using the serial number found on the bottom of your Yoto Mini. You can also buy additional Smart Cables on the Accessories page for a nominal cost.
Do I have to pay shipping costs for the Yoto Mini Smart Cable?
No, you don’t have to pay any shipping costs for the Yoto Mini Smart Cable. One Yoto Mini Smart Cable will be shipped free of charge for each Yoto Mini using a tracked courier service. If you buy an additional Smart Cable, normal shipping charges apply.
Can I continue to use my Yoto Mini while I wait for my Yoto Mini Smart Cable to arrive?
As a precaution, you should not use your Yoto Mini until you have received your Yoto Mini Smart Cable.
How does the Yoto Mini Smart Cable work?
The Yoto Mini Smart Cable has been developed by Yoto working with independent battery and product safety experts. The smart cable contains a microprocessor chip which is able to communicate with the Yoto Mini to keep the battery charge within safe limits – and minimise the risk of overheating.
The Yoto Mini Smart Cable uses a faster charging protocol to allow your Yoto Mini to be charged at 2x the normal charging speed.
When connected to a Yoto Mini and charging as normal, the Yoto Mini Smart Cable LED will be lit up in full. A short press of the Yoto Mini power button will show the blue charging icon with an approximate battery level. The smart cable LED light will continuously blink and charging will stop if a fault has been detected.

Does this issue affect my Yoto Player?
This only affects owners of Yoto Mini manufactured between 2021 and 2023. Yoto Players and Yoto Minis (2024 edition) are not affected by this issue and you should continue to use them as normal.
I didn’t buy my Yoto Mini from Yoto directly, can I still get a Yoto Mini Smart Cable?
Yes, all registered Yoto Mini users are eligible for a free Yoto Mini Smart Cable.
What if I sold or gifted my Yoto Mini?
We will contact all registered users, but if you sold or are the gift-giver and not the user, you do not need to take any action. One Yoto Mini Smart Cable will be provided free of charge per Yoto Mini. Registered users need to insert the serial number found on the bottom of their Yoto Mini at https://yotoplay.com/recall. A Yoto Mini Smart Cable will then be dispatched.
Do I need to do anything to get the software update?
You don’t need to do anything. The software update will be automatically carried out on any Yoto Mini connected to Wi-Fi and not being used. To check if the update has taken place, open the Yoto App, go to Players and open the Settings menu of your Yoto Mini. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings to check the Yoto OS version is v2.17.5 or higher.
Can I get a refund?
The Yoto Mini Smart Cable provided will enable you to continue to use and enjoy your Yoto Mini as normal. However, as recognition of the inconvenience caused and as a gesture of goodwill, Yoto is offering customers a voucher of £15 which can be used to purchase any product on the Yoto website. This will be emailed to you after your Yoto Mini Smart Cable has been shipped.
Will using the Yoto Mini Smart Cable mean the battery charge won’t last as long?
Both the Yoto Mini Smart Cable and the software update will restrict the maximum charge level to protect the battery. We have already been able to introduce optimisations to the Yoto Mini software to reduce the impact on battery life. Further optimisations will be released following shipping of the Yoto Mini Smart Cable. Any impact on run time and user experience should be minimal.
When will I receive my voucher?
You will receive a follow up email four weeks after your Yoto Mini Smart Cable has been shipped with your unique voucher code. We are offering a £15 voucher, per Yoto Mini, which can be redeemed against any product on the Yoto website.
We apologise that we are unable to send these sooner. This will be a manual rather than automated process, plus we want to ensure our warehouses prioritise Yoto Mini Smart Cable shipments in the first instance.
How can you guarantee the safety of your other products?
The safety of Yoto families is our number one priority and we have taken this matter extremely seriously. Yoto products are safe and suitable for use by kids aged 3 and up. We recommend only adults use the charger, which should be kept out of reach of children at all times. We want our products to grow with your kids throughout their childhood, but that’s only possible if our products can withstand the trials and tribulations of family life. We maintain high levels of control and supervision to make sure our products have the longevity and quality you would expect. Is this why Yoto Mini has been out of stock?
Yoto halted production of Yoto Mini as we worked on investigating and resolving this issue. We have also permanently stopped supply from this Yoto Mini battery supplier.
