Privacy for Kids

Hello! What is this?

Yoto has made this page to explain to children (individuals under the age of 18) how we get and use their information.

For parents, we have a longer page that explains this in much more detail. Parents can find that here.

If you’re a kid, you might need help understanding this page. If you do, show it to your parent or guardian.

What is Yoto?

We are Yoto! We are a business. We make and sell Yoto players and the cards that you play in Yoto players.

Your parents can also use the Yoto App, Yoto’s website and Yoto Space. These are for adults only. You should just use your Yoto player!

What is privacy and “personal data”?

Privacy is your right to keep information about you safe. We sometimes call this information your “personal data” or “personal information”. Personal data can be things like your name, your favourite Yoto card, or pictures of you! Yoto knows some information about you through your use of the Yoto players. We want you to know how we get information about you and how we use it.

What does Yoto know about me?

Yoto finds out some information about anyone who uses a Yoto player (like you!). Yoto knows how the Yoto player is used. For example, we know what cards, radio stations or podcasts a Yoto player has played. We also know if a Yoto player isn’t feeling well, such as its battery level and if there are technical errors. It finds this out using the internet to connect to Yoto players. Yoto players don’t have eyes or a camera!

When might my parent tell Yoto things about me?

Your parent or guardian might share your information with us once you start using the Yoto player.

Information about you that your parent might give us may be your name, date of birth, recordings of your voice, photos of you, or any information about you they give us when they enter a Yoto competition.

Your parent may use your name to name a Yoto player or a playlist. Parents may share your voice recording with Yoto to make a Make Your Own Yoto playable card for you or a friend. Parents may also record your voice or joke to publicly share with other people who listen to Yoto Daily, or let us share your story publicly on our website.

Your parent might also tell us about how you use your Yoto Player, or how much you like your cards. They might do this in reviews or Yoto surveys.

What does Yoto do with my information?

Yoto uses information about how a Yoto player is used to make sure it works properly. We also look at this information to help us know what Yoto users like to listen to.

We might see that your Yoto player plays the same story card all the time, or plays more music cards than story cards. We might use this information to help us decide what new Yoto cards to sell, or to show your parent other cards we think someone in your family might like.

If your parent puts your name on a playlist, or a Yoto player name, Yoto only stores this for your parents and other family members to see.

If your parent gives us your data to enter into a competition, to access discounts ahead of your birthday, or to publicly share with peopleto people who listen to Yoto Daily, or agrees that we can publicly share your story, then we use the data they share only for that reason.

We mostly keep audio recordings so your parent can use them on cards. Sometimes we need to listen to Make Your Own recordings to check that it doesn’t break any rules.

How do you keep my information safe?

Yoto works hard to keep your information safe. Yoto needs to share your information sometimes, but we are very careful when we do. Yoto only uses data for the reasons explained to you or your parents. Yoto only keeps your information if it needs it.

Do I have a say?

Yes. Children and parents have “rights” when we use their information. You have a right to know how we use your information. You can ask us to give it to you. You can also ask us to stop using your information or to delete it. Sometimes, we can’t do this, like when this would stop us from keeping you safe. If you want to have a say, you can contact us. Ask your parent or guardian to help. There is much more detail on the adult privacy page!
