Creator Q&A

Tell us about yourself

I live in Los Angeles, CA. As a child, thanks to a portable record player, I listened to everything from The Beatles to Tchaikovsky (I had a lovely version of "The Nutcracker Suite" on red vinyl!). I grew up on classic children’s records like “The Lollipop Tree” by Burl Ives, and “Mommy Gimme a Drink Water” by Danny Kaye.

What inspired you to make this title(s)?

One of my favorite records as a child was “Grimm’s Fairy Tales told by Danny Kaye”. This album used sound to great effect and really pulled me into the world of each story. This was my introduction to the world of fairy tales. The magical quality of fairy tales was inspirational to me and over the years I wrote my own.

"I like the idea of a child being able to play music the way I did with a portable record player."

Who do you imagine listening to your audio?

It is my hope that listeners of all ages will enjoy the humor and quirkiness of my stories. But I also feel that fairy tales can help children face real world situations. I would want my own children to be able to deal with making mistakes and to handle conflict. So, I have a story about the damaging effects of holding a grudge, and another where characters are able to see the errors in their thinking and decide to do better. My goal is to impart these ideas with fun and humor.

Is there anything different about making audio for Yoto listeners?

As of now, I am making my children’s albums (so far Storybook Time and Sleepytime) exclusively available for the Yoto device(s). I am not doing that because I have some special deal with Yoto. I simply feel this is the best way for my children's albums to be heard. I like the idea of a child being able to play music the way I did with a portable record player. There’s something special about holding a card in your hands and putting it in the device, having the only screen be displaying colorful pixel art and letting the rest be left to the imagination.

What’s next?

I am currently finishing up “An Exploramagorical Journey Through Nature” which will feature songs in a variety of styles about different animals.
